On 9 February 2022, our partner Meriç Bahçıvan sat in Bulgarian - Turkish Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s panel on “Authorized Economic Operators (AEOs) and Custom Penalties under Turkish law” together with Yücel Karadiş, the founder and partner at Consultürk Global. The panelists provided perspectives on various practical issues, including:
- The benefits provided by the AEO scheme;
- The fact that AEOs in the EU, which only amount to 0.4% of the total number of importers and exporters, represent 51% of EU’s foreign trade volume;
- The estimation that Turkey has a potential to absorb around 600 more AEOs and the route to facilitate this; and
- Recent precedents on objection to custom penalties and practical considerations to avoid the hinderance of claims due to procedural issues.
